Subaru is a brand that is well known for it's rallying prowess, the Subaru rally team winning several World Rally Championships down the years with models like the Impreza WRX and WRX STi. Some of the most iconic rally drivers in history have raced - and won - with the Subaru rally team including Colin McRae, Richard Burns and Petter Solberg.
Despite this, however, Subaru wasn't forged on the altar of rallying and has much more humble beginnings. Originally an aircraft research laboratory in 1915 and later a manufacturer, Subaru - or the Nakajima Aircraft Company - became a leading provider of aircraft for Japan during the Second World War.
After this, the company went through several restructures and was known as the Fuji Heavy Industries. The CEO Kenji Kita wanted to begin manufacturing cars and this led to the creation of the Subaru brand and also the creation of the first car - the P1.
After a series of acquisitions including stakes purchased by Nissan, Renault, Toyota and even General Motors; all of whom had a say in how the company was shaped and developed and both Toyota and Subaru still have a collaboration to this day.
Alongside the famous rally models like the Impreza, Subaru also has a well-versed portfolio in estate cars and saloons. The Subaru Legacy was one of the most popular cars of the 90s in America and the Subaru Justy currently holds the record for the fastest sub-1 litre car without a turbo, with an average of 123mph.
Their crossover range such as the Forester and Outback also gains a lot of plaudits and popularity, with their all-wheel-drive functionality making them appeal to American drivers and the infamous Subaru Boxer engine, with the sideways moving pistons one of the founding achievements of the brand in making it unique.
Subaru's rallying pedigree means they have cultivated a reputation for safety, especially in their range of SUVs like the Subaru XV, which has been a finalist in several safety awards including the 2018 What Car? Car Of The Year Awards and Subaru as a manufacturer has been voted Best Manufacturer for Safety Features in the 2019 Driver Power Survey.
